This author is an auto buy for me and I loved this start to her new series!!!! It has a similar formula to the Cole McGinnis series but with enough differences to keep it unique. I appreciated that Miki seemed willing to move on - even though he had gotten hit with a hell of a raw deal in his life. There was a lot of sadness around Miki but at the end of the story I felt he was going to be able to smile more. This story was really about Miki being able to purge all that previous pain and hurt so he could move on.
Kane grabbed me from the start - the rock that Miki needed to know was there if he needed him. Miki was what Kane seemed to need as well. We had a wonderful supporting family of characters - the big brother Conner who I wish I could marry, the supportive cop friend, Edie, Dude and Kane's family (great parents). There were some nice pieces of humor; my favorite was Miki's internal dialogue in his confrontations with Brigid. The mystery was good as well. The cliff hanger ending was pretty torturous and I'm looking forward to reading about how Damien being taken from the crash and it being hid from the world is explained in the next book. I'm glad that Kane and Miki were at a good place in their relationship at the end and that the cliffhanger was more about the next book/Damien's story and not about their relationship being backtracked. I need these guys moving forward and being happy. I also liked that the main MCs didn't get shot or excessively hurt which happens a lot in the McGinnis series :)
